I forget who said you cannot write a poem
On the computer, obviously he’s wrong
Or the dilettante who said to make yourself
Uncomfortable in order to produce art
Wrong again, since if you’re producing art
You’re more than uncomfortable, and there’s no chance
Of gaining that metaphysical couch in this world

But they do fill people’s heads with false pre-digested
Considerations you can only come to yourself
Like this poem sitting at my desk, in the chair
Saying these words when instead I could be meditating
On Gandhi, or Rumi, or other beautiful empty sayings
About poetry and ash which merely exhibit
A certain cleverness because they write what

Meagerly assumes a poetic form without the actuality
Being revealed of drunken nights and discipline
Happy idiotic grins and contemptuous events
Absent, the chintz avoided, the plague of mortality
Kept at bay for those who most appreciate
Their approximations mediated by great opinion
