Dog Nation

The dogs have taken charge of everything,
eat whatever’s available, growl and snarl
amongst themselves; leaving garbage
everywhere as they shit at leisure: abandon
an ever-widening puddle of piss which threatens
to envelope what might be stationary

These mutts rut, half-starved and swollen,
tiny creatures crawling over them bring disease,
as each demands slobbering affection of everyone
because they breathe: their loyalty fake as those rubber
noses which lead wherever they must go: knowing
all that is to be human requires vision, or obedience
