The Long Embrace

41MUOWARcML._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_

Old habits persist:
the cold pure length of sky
provides familiar distance,
I can’t capture or decide on

Who knows how you will dance
as you are dancing now

Where I step beyond
the slightest hint of envy:
reeling, in the city streets
your eye commands, your soul retreats

The Process Of Elimination

41MUOWARcML._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_

Until you are bankrupt:
that is to say
without the resources
which both serve and detain

You will be
merely figment of another:
anonymous man, perversely
drawn to chaos, where

He does not contemplate
your murder or his safety –
idle triumphs best
left to idolizing dilettantes

But like a true aristocrat,
unfamiliar with the city,
concerns himself:
with only the immedicable present

The Situation

41MUOWARcML._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_

The situation
Is getting grim
Goodbye:
To Alice and me

I say this now,
As you said
It to him:
With the same, malicious glee

The White Goddess

41MUOWARcML._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_

You let me stand naked,
behind you, in my hotel room:
‘changing for dinner,’
we called it in another era

I received your welcome,
as I knelt before
the blonde goddess, of
my sodden entertainment

The shadow of a tree, or some
faint breeze made more real,
by the vision you displayed:
could not have been as free

This Poem Is Out Of Order

41MUOWARcML._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_

How unnerving to wake before
everyone else in the hotel, to
lie there like a criminal or thief;
bowed beneath the sheets,
the fetal position being one of
extreme innocence: even for the dead.

Demoralizing to realize it is
the radio,
sending static from the fringes.
This is no absent lover, familiar
with your name; it’s a cowboy,
a handmaiden in the modern style.

Mere entertainment, where you can
wash your hands of anything:
especially the pain love also brings.
Get back to the job; old friends
who will reassure you nothing changes:
disco til you drop, the terror remains.

Bird Watching

41MUOWARcML._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_

Even the sparrow’s song must
be bought by crumbs;
the restoration of grace,
and vanishing fear, taking on the form
of a full belly,
piping the food downward.

The neck stretches, the meal begins,
each hand of satisfaction
precedes
the infinite cruelty:
the branches voicing ruin, intestines
and shit, splattering in tune.

Collision

41MUOWARcML._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_

The lamp by your window
tells me:
I must be up to watch the dawn
schemes are formed,
men go wrong

The great engines
of the mind lie rusting
against the night:
slanted slightly,
like empires disarrayed
